There are mainly two kinds of state succession:
1. Universal Succession
It embodies two things;
- When one state is entirely absolved by the other wither by subjugation or voluntary merger. And,
- When a state gets divided into separate part each tending to become a separate international person.
2. Partial Succession
Partial succession occurs in any of the following circumstances;
- Cession of one part of state to another state i.e. of California to the USA in 1874
- Revolt by a part of state
- Acceptance of supremacy of another state
- To become a protectorate state of the other
