Kinds of State Succession

Sociology | Mercantile Law | International Law | International Relations

There are mainly two kinds of state succession:

1. Universal Succession
It embodies two things;

  • When one state is entirely absolved by the other wither by subjugation or voluntary merger. And,
  • When a state gets divided into separate part each tending to become a separate international person.

2. Partial Succession
Partial succession occurs in any of the following circumstances;

  • Cession of one part of state to another state i.e. of California to the USA in 1874
  • Revolt by a part of state
  • Acceptance of supremacy of another state
  • To become a protectorate state of the other
