(a) Define LAN and WAN.
(b) Differentiate between LAN and WAN.

LAN
LAN (Local Area Network) is the most common type of computer network. It is a type of computer network that covers a small area. In LAN, the nodes are connected to each other using cables. It usually connects the computers and other devices within one office or a building or a group of buildings. LAN is often used to share resources such as printer, hard disks and programs.

WAN
WAN (Wide Area Network) is a type of computer network that covers a large area. Sometimes this network is also referred to as long-haul network. The computers connected to this network can be in different cities and countries. Computers in WAN are often connected through telephone lines. Many large organizations make use of WAN. For example, in Pakistan, large organizations like PIA, WAPDA, ARMY, NADRA, BANKS etc. use the WAN.

(b) Difference between LAN and WAN.

LAN

  • Covers small geographical area.
  • Computers are directly connected through physical cable for data transmission.
  • Network Interface Card (NIC) used for data transmission.
  • In LAN, connection is permanent using cables.

WAN

  • Covers large geographical area.
  • Computers are connected through telephone line or microwave system for data transmission.
  • Modem is used for data transmission.
  • In WAN, connection is not permanent.
