The Port Qasim coal-fired power plant is an under-construction Coal-Fired power generation project at Port Qasim near Karachi. The installed capacity of the project is 2×660 = 1320 MW (2 units of 660 MW each). The Port Qasim coal-fired power project is a joint venture by Qatar’s Al-Mirqab Capital and Sinohydro Resources Limited.

Most of the coal used for the power plant will be imported from Indonesia. The estimated cost of the project is $1,980 million. Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif inaugurated the project on May 06, 2014 and said, “We will eliminate darkness from this country soon”. Civil works on site started in January 2016, and mechanical structure work started in March 2016. The expected Commercial Operation Date (COD) is March 2018.
