(c) Siloxanes Coatings & Organosilicon Chemistry
Functional coatings are materials applied to different surfaces for protective purposes. The research for these materials is mainly subjected to increasingly tougher specifications. In addition to being protective, coatings must have additional properties such as low microorganism-adherence, self-cleaning and repair properties.
The aim of this research is a contribution towards the development of three types of functional coatings:
(1) Coatings that are resistant to microorganisms or corrosion (for sea transportation vessels)
(2) Coatings that have self-cleaning (hydrophobic) properties
(3) transparent, anti-dust and anti-reflecting properties (for coating mobile phone screens, spectacle lenses or solar panels).
Finally, we can use chemical functionalization of the surface with appropriate halo- and alkoxy- silanes to create a functional surface. Our experience shows this can be achieved either as a monolayer or as a polymeric coating.
