Basic Probability Vocabulary

Suppose a coin is tossed one time. So the outcomes could be head or tail.

Experiment
The tossing of a coin is called experiment.

Event
The outcomes, head or tail, are called events. The head is one event, and the tail is another event.

Sample Space
All possible outcomes (head and tail in this case) are called sample space, denoted by S.S or by the symbol .

Example: Rolling of a Dice
Now, suppose a dice is rolled one time. So the outcome could be 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 or 6.

Experiment:
The rolling of the dice is an experiment.

Event
The outcomes, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, are called events. The 1 is one event, and the 2 is another event, similarly, 3 is another event. So, there are six events in this case.

Sample Space
All possible outcomes {1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6} are called sample space, denoted by S.S or by the symbol . Written as
S.S = {1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6}
