Thar Coal Power Project

The Thar Coal Mining & Power Project is an under-construction Coal-Fired power generation project in Tharparkar, Sindh. The installed capacity of the project is 4×330 = 1320 MW (4 units of 330 MW each). The Thar coal mining and power project is a joint venture by Sindh Engro Coal Mining Company (SECMC) and Engro Powergen Thar Limited (EPTL).

In the first phase, a mine of 3.8 million tons per year capacity will be developed by SECMC. This coal will be utilized by a mine-mouth power plant of 2×330 = 660 MW, a Project which is being established by Engro Powergen Limited. The expected Commercial Operation Date (COD) for Phase 1 of both Projects is June 2019. In the second phase, the capacity of coal mining will be enhanced to 7.6 million tons per year, and another 660 MW of electricity will be generated.

The expected cost of the project is $2 billion. China and Pakistan signed agreement to finance the project on December 21, 2015. A syndicate of local banks will provide Rs.520 billion loan, and a syndicate of Chinese banks will provide $820 million loan. Government of Pakistan has provided a sovereign guarantee of $700 million to underwrite the loan.

Thar Coal Power Project Inauguration

Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif and former President Asif Ali Zardari on January 31, 2014 jointly inaugurated the Thar Coal Mining & Power Project in Tharparkar, Sindh. The Thar coal project is part of the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC).
