Salt Mine Khewra

Khewra Salt Mine is situated close to a small town, Pind Dadan Khan in Jhelum district of the province of Punjab, almost 200 km away from Islamabad. It is Pakistan’s oldest and largest salt ranges and the world’s second largest operating salt mine after Goderich USA. Salt formed from this mine (98% to 99% pure) is not just supplied in Pakistan, but also all over the world.

In BC 326 salt was discovered by licking of the horses of Alexander the Great’s army who came to fight a battle against Raja Porus. Dr. Warth, a renowned Mining Engineer of UK, laid out the main tunnel at ground level in 1872 to provide an easy access to salt deposits. Saltly occurs in the form of an irregular dome like structure. The mine buildings have 19 stories, with 11 below the ground. The total length of the salt range is 300 kilometers. It has rock salt resources of 6.687 Billion tons. Only 50% of salt is mined from the operative site, and the remaining 50% is left as pillars to support the mines structure.

Khewra mine is a very popular tourist attraction with up to 250,000 visitors each year. Visitors are taken into the mine on the train. People from different parts of the country, as well as foreign visitors, are attracted towards its beauty. The most surprising part of this salt mine is the salt made sculptures and various historic buildings. Such as salt brick made mosque, models of Minar-e-Pakistan, Sheesh Mahal and model of Great Wall of China made up of salt blocks, etc.

A salt therapy clinic with 20 beds was established in 2007 near the mines for the treatment of asthma and other respiratory diseases.

Khewra Salt Mine is one of the spectacular natural minerals deposit, being used for tourism as well. They are also known as “Museum of Geology”. Khewra Salt Mine of Pakistan is a must visit place.
