Olympics

Olympics are most popular and mega international multi-sport event in which thousands of athletes from almost all over the world participate in a variety of competitions. Olympics are divided in summer and winter sports competitions which are held every four years separately.

Recent Summer Olympics
2008 (China), 2012 (Great Britain), 2016 (Brazil), 2020 (Japan).

Recent Winter Olympics
2010 (Canada), 2014 (Russia), 2018 (South Korea), 2022 (China).

The Olympics are governed by International Olympic Committee (IOC) which was founded by a French educator and historian Pierre de Coubertin in 1894. Thus, Pierre de Coubertin is called father of the modern Olympic Games. The creation of IOC was inspired by the ancient Olympic Games which were held in Athens, Greece from the 8th century BC to the 4th century AD.

The first president of IOC was a Greek businessman and writer Demetrios Vikelas, and its headquarter is located in Lausanne, Switzerland. The first Summer Olympics organized by the IOC were held in 1896 in Athens, Greece and the first Winter Olympics organized by the IOC was held in 1924 in Paris, France. It should be noted that due to World wars the Olympic Games were cancelled in 1916, 1940, and 1944.
