Socrates during his speech in the court said,

But either I do not corrupt them, or I corrupt them unintentionally ….. If I had been better advised, I should have left off doing what I only did unintentionally. (“Socrates Apology” by Plato)

The basic idea here is that humans always seek to do what they perceive to be the good. Even if an action is obviously a horrible evil to everyone else, the person who commits the act is seeking to attain some good that they perceive in it.
