Educational assessment is the process of documenting the learning and development of a student.

Definition
Assessment is the systematic basis for making inferences about the learning and development of students. It is the process of defining, selecting, designing, collecting, analyzing, interpreting, and using information to increase students’ learning and development.

Types of Assessment
Educational assessment is often divided into three types:

  1. Initial assessment
  2. Formative Assessment, and
  3. Summative Assessment

Initial Assessment
Initial assessment is conducted prior to the start of teaching or instructions. The initial assessment is used to know what the students’ current knowledge is about the subject. It helps the teacher to explain the material more efficiently. These assessments are not count towards final grade.

Formative Assessment
Formative assessment is an assessment for learning. It is carried out throughout a course or project. The aim of formative assessment is to see if the students understand the instruction before doing a summative (or final) assessment. These assessments may or may not count towards final grade.

Summative assessment
Summative assessment is an assessment of learning (What a student has learnt). It is an assessment that is carried out at the end of a course or project. Summative assessments are used to assign students a course grade.
