The constitution of Pakistan came into effect on 14 August 1973. The constitution states that the sovereignty belongs to Allah Almighty. The official name of the country declared as “Islamic Republic of Pakistan” and Islam was chosen as the state religion.

According to the constitution of Pakistan, there shall be a parliamentary form of government with two legislative houses: (1) Senate, and (2) National Assembly. Prime Minister shall be the head of the government and President shall be the head of the state.

Constitution of 1956
The first constitution enforced on 23 March 1956.

Constitution of 1962
The second constitution enforced on 8 June 1962.

Constitution of 1973
The third and the current constitution of Pakistan came into effect on 14 August 1973.
