Position in Options

A businessman can:

  1. Buy a call option
  2. Sell a call option
  3. Buy a put option
  4. Sell a put option

Buyers are referred to assumes a long position, and sellers are referred to assumes short position. For example, if an investor has bought a call option then it is said that the investor has assumed a long position in the call option. Similarly, if an investor has sold a put option then it is said that the investor has assumed a short position in the put option. Hence, there are four positions in options:

  1. Buying a call option
    A long position in a call option
  2. Selling a call option
    A short position in a call option
  3. Buying a put option
    A long position in a put option
  4. Selling a put option
    A short position in a put option
