The Tarbela 4th Extension Project is an under-construction electricity generation project in Haripur, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. The installed capacity of the 4th extension is 1410 MW (three units of 470 MW each), and it will enhance the total capacity of the Tarbela dam to 4,888 MW from the existing 3,478 MW.

Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif inaugurated the construction work on February 26, 2014 and PM Abbasi inaugurated the first unit of 470 MW on March 10, 2018. The project is being funded by World bank ($840 Million) and WAPDA ($74 Million). The project involved Modification of Tunnel-3 & 4 Intakes and Construction of Powerhouse, and the project is being executed by Chinese firm Sinohydro and Germany’s Voith Hydro. Besides, PC-I of the Tarbela 5th extension project of another installed capacity 1410 MW has been approved by ECNEC in a meeting held on December 20, 2016.
