Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif on 9 October 2015 performed the groundbreaking of 1180 MW Bhikki Power Plant in Sheikhupura, Punjab. It is a natural gas power plant, and uses regasified liquefied natural gas (RLNG) as a fuel. The project is funded by the government of Punjab, and was completed within the record 32 months. Chief Minister Punjab Shehbaz Sharif inaugurated the fully operational Bhikki Power plant on May 19, 2018.
